With the world reeling under power shortage, new ways are being considered to generate the electricity required for life to go on. The East Japan Railway company is testing a system that produces electricity as people pass through ticket gates or turnstiles. The system is based on a series of piezo elements embedded in the floor under the ticket gates. They are mostly crystals or ceramics and have the ability to generate electricity from the pressure and vibration produced when commuters step on them. As people pass through the gate, lamp lights up, indicating that electricity has been produced. The electricity generated is stored in high efficient storage systems.
